1. Original Sin and Redemption Charts – Scripture and Comments  Format: Word doc

The first part of the chart divides the effect of original sin into death, corruption, and guilt and looks at the subjective effect and then how we fill, cover and hide to deal with the three effects.
The second part of the chart looks at how redemption in Christ defeats the 3 effects of original sin through regeneration, justification by faith, and sin imputed to Christ. Ongoing temptation to fill, cover and hide.

These charts are based on notes from lectures by Dr. John Coe at Talbot’s Institute for Spiritual Formation, approx. Fall 2005.

2. Consolation and Desolation (Dryness) (Dry times, dark nights, felt absence of God) Format: Powerpoint (27 slides)

  • This presentation looks at the experiences of times of sensing God’s blessing or presence (consolation, dryness) and not sensing God’s blessing or presence (desolation).
  • What are the main purposes of desolation/dryness? How does it feel? How do we walk through times of dryness?
  • The triangle model of the human soul allows us to more clearly show dynamics such as depth of transformation and changing awareness level.
  • Most of the material comes from John of the Cross’ writings Ascent of Mt. Carmel and Dark Night of the Soul who based his thoughts on Scripture and the great teachers of the Church. This model is generally accepted by many Protestants and Catholics.
