Close To The Brokenhearted – Weekly Words Of Encouragement

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Psalms 34:18 (NLT) Although we are citizens of heaven we still become brokenhearted at times. Our spirits still get crushed at times. But God encourages us that he is close to us. He doesn’t say that we shouldn’t be brokenhearted but rather he is willing to just be with us. This reminds me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:4: “blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.” Even better, he will rescue us when we are crushed. There are many ways in which he may rescue us. Under the New Covenant he may not rescue us until the next age after Jesus returns. He may rescue us right away like delivering Peter from prison. He may rescue our hearts and not our circumstances by giving us an internal blessing that takes the bitterness out of Continue Reading →

The Power Of Loving God

Loving God is the supreme mark of maturity. When we love him we will desire to be like him. We will desire to see him someday. We will desire to please him. We will find ourselves just thinking about him. We will desire to study his words in Scripture. We will desire to talk to him. We will desire to purify everything ungodly from our life. We will desire to be with others who love him. All of these naturally flow from loving God, even if they might start small in our early Christian life. As we follow these desires they will grow and so will our Christformation. When we love God then this love will naturally manifest through us in many ways. It lifts our hearts, blooms into joy and gives us strength. In the words of the author of the Imitation of Christ: Love flies, runs and jumps Continue Reading →

Tasting God – Weekly Words Of Encouragement

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Psalms 34:8 (ESV) When we taste God we find sweetness for our soul. The word “good” might be the best word to describe God’s nature. What does it mean to be good? Strong’s dictionary uses these words to define it: beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, fine, glad, graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, loving, merry, pleasant, precious, sweet. The Brown Driver Briggs Hebrew dictionary uses these words to define good: kind, acceptable, joyful, vigorous, be pleasant, delightful, delicious, sweet or savoury. These words do a great job of describing God. This is what we “bite” into when we taste God. We also find this idea in 2 Pet. 1:3 which says that we are partakers of the divine nature. The Lord’s Supper is an experience of tasting the good flesh and blood of Christ. Jesus said he was the “bread of life”. Even Continue Reading →

Kingdom Attitudes Towards African-Americans.

American slavery was one of the most dehumanizing brands of slavery in the modern world. English revivalist John Wesley said it was the worst form of slavery that he was aware of after he visited America. This realization eventually generated a strong opposition to slavery by Christians in the northern U.S. After an unbelievably bloody civil war, the slaves were set free and African Americans very quickly became more prosperous in the South and gained positions of influence. Alarmed by this, influential whites in the South began to pass laws to discriminate against African-Americans. These laws came to be known as the Jim Crow laws. They persisted through the 1960’s and their impact is still felt. Obviously, as Christians we are horrified by the way African-Americans have been treated. This has resulted in substantial economic disadvantage. The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis provides statistics for this and the Washington Post Continue Reading →

Holy Radiators – Weekly Words Of Encouragement

Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Psalms 34:5 (NIV) Those who keep their gaze on the Lord will find that their lives will shine with the Lord’s radiance. In other words, we reflect God’s beautiful light when we keep our focus on him. This is a privilege that he gives to his people. We find a vivid illustration of this gift in the life of Moses. When he went up on Mt. Sinai and beheld the Lord, his face began to shine so much that when he came back down the people were afraid of the radiance (Exodus 34:30) so he ended up putting a veil over his face. 2 Corinthians 3:18 draws on this story and explains that believers “with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” Continue Reading →
